Client

Manchester City Council

Role

Signage design, wayfinding strategy, signage design guidelines

Location

Blackley, Manchester, UK

Project

Heaton Park is one of Manchester’s most loved destinations, welcoming around 1.8 million visitors a year.

Spanning more than 640 acres, it is among the largest municipal parks in Europe, with multiple entrances, long walking routes, and a wide mix of attractions. Manchester City Council needed a clear signage and wayfinding scheme to help visitors orient themselves, choose routes confidently, and explore more of the park without confusion.

Solution

ABG Design won a competitive tender to deliver the new wayfinding approach for the park. Working in partnership with the Heaton Park team, we developed a vibrant, family-friendly signage system and a suite of visitor orientation maps that align with the park’s refreshed brand.

New entrance signage creates a confident welcome, while clear hierarchy, consistent graphics, and easy-to-read mapping support navigation across the full visitor journey. The result is a coherent signage and wayfinding scheme that helps more people discover more of Heaton Park.

“Howard and the team from ABG Design have been a real pleasure to work with. They have translated our brand at Heaton Park into a modern suite of signs that has really enhanced the park. The creative team worked hard taking on board all our requirements and we are delighted with the results.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the ABG team. We’ve really enjoyed working with you.”
