Project
Portland Castle is one of Henry VIII’s best-preserved coastal forts, built to defend Portland Harbour and still dramatically positioned on the shoreline today.
As a family-focused English Heritage site, it needed a refreshed interpretation offer that could explain 450+ years of military and social history in an engaging, accessible way.
External interpretation also had to withstand harsh maritime conditions, with robust materials and finishes capable of resisting sea air, wind, and salt exposure.

Our approach
ABG Design developed an integrated interpretation design and exhibition design approach aimed at families and children, using hands-on learning and layered storytelling to suit different ages and visit styles. We mapped the visitor journey from arrival to departure, identifying key locations for new interpretation spaces.
Indoors, we shaped a series of interactive exhibitions and interpretation points that bring the castle’s characters, defences, and daily life into focus.
Outdoors, we translated the narrative into durable external panels, carefully specifying materials to perform in a coastal environment while remaining sensitive to this historic setting.

Solution
ABG Design delivered new family-friendly exhibitions combining tactile interactives, concise facts, and immersive storytelling to reveal the castle’s role from Tudor origins through later conflicts.
Outside, robust interpretation design and orientation points extend the story into the landscape, with sea-resistant construction ensuring longevity at this exposed waterfront site.
The new exhibitions and interpretation create a connected visitor experience that makes Portland Castle’s history clear, memorable, and enjoyable for heritage audiences of all ages.
