Project
St Mary’s Church, Lydiard Tregoze holds over 1,000 years of history, from the St John family legacy to links with Thomas Becket.
Its artefacts, monuments, and wall paintings offer a rare window into England’s past, but the church needed a clear, respectful way to share this story with visitors while remaining an active place of worship.
Set within the 260-acre Lydiard Park estate, the church and grounds also needed signage and wayfinding to help visitors find the church, navigate the site confidently, and understand key points of interest along the approach.

Our approach
We worked closely with the church over several years, shaping a sensitive interpretation and exhibition design approach that balanced heritage depth with accessibility.
We focused on flexible exhibition spaces that could adapt to services and events without compromising the building or collections. In parallel, we developed a coherent wayfinding and signage design system for the church and surrounding grounds, aligned with a new visual identity.

Solution
We delivered a new in-church exhibition design, housed in a bespoke oak cabinet that folds away when needed and opens to reveal interpretive display panels. We also created a new church logo and applied this identity across printed materials and the wider signage and wayfinding suite.
Across the site, ABG Design delivered new wayfinding signage for the church and grounds, guiding visitors through Lydiard Park to the church and around key external features. Alongside this, we designed a miniature display version of the 400-year-old St John polyptych, allowing visitors to appreciate this extraordinary artwork while protecting the original.
