Bangor City Signage & Wayfinding

Client

Cyngor Gwynedd Council

Role

Signage & wayfinding, wayfinding strategy, signage design, public consultation

Location

Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales

Project

Bangor is a historic coastal city with a spread-out layout and a town centre that needed clearer connections between key destinations.

Cyngor Gwynedd wanted a town-wide signage and wayfinding strategy to link neighbourhoods, transport, the waterfront, parking, and especially the high street. The system also had to reflect Bangor’s Welsh identity and serve a bilingual audience.

Our approach

ABG Design worked closely with Cyngor Gwynedd to develop a coherent, town-wide wayfinding strategy. We mapped pedestrian movement, arrival points, and decision moments, then built a clear hierarchy for routes, signs, and orientation. We also created a new town centre map design to help visitors quickly understand Bangor’s layout and key destinations.

Public consultation shaped the scheme. We ran drop-in sessions in Welsh and English, sharing early signage concepts, gathering feedback, and refining the final designs based on local insight.

Solution

ABG Design delivered a Bangor-wide signage and wayfinding scheme that strengthens navigation through the city and supports a more connected high street. The final system is dual-language, with Welsh leading followed by English, and includes clear orientation and mapping that make Bangor easier to explore for residents and visitors alike.
